![]() ![]() Longer work trips I'd carry both the Lenovo + iPad. Of course, could accomplish with a Macbook + work laptop, but thinking is that go-to device would be work laptop or iPad + keyboard folio for a work trip (when they resume) or personal trip/vacation, respectively. I've been toying with the idea of a Mac Mini and picking up an ultrawide monitor (one of the 34" <= 4k models in the $700 range, nothing too fancy) to replace the iMac and standalone monitor I keep at my desk for my work laptop, and then switching between the work laptop and the Mac Mini via which is currently plugged in to the monitor. I have been a user of Windows and Linux systems for over 20 years.IMac 27" (fusion drive no less) + iPad Pro 10.5" owner here for personal use, while I use a Lenovo X1 for work- used to bring it to an office today, but of course working remote most of this year. My only Apple products have been a couple of iPad Airs (2nd and 3rd versions), which were typically used for web browsing and reading e-books.Ībout two weeks ago I was able to purchase a new MacBook Air M1, base version, for a delivered price of $700 USD. It seemed like a good way to get some experience with MacOS, and I figured the MacBook would be a reasonable alternative to getting an iPad Pro at some point. While I am still getting used to the operating system, the performance and battery life of the MacBook have completely changed my perspective on how I will use desktops, laptops, and tablets. I expect to maintain a Windows desktop for certain functions, but I can see how a MacBook Air could become my only mobile device (replacing iPads and Windows/Linux laptops). I think the base model I now use should meet my needs for the next year or so, but I would like to eventually move to 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. I have a very capable Windows desktop that works fine for photo and video editing (i7 9700, Nvidia RTX 3080 ti, 32GB system memory), but it would be great to use a MacBook Air when I want to do some light photo/video editing while traveling. At this point, I don't see a need for another mobile device (other than a phone). What irritates me is that I have a Windows laptop that I got last June and now don't see a need for it. I also have an iPad Air 3 that I don't see a use for. The MacBook Air offers enough to replace both for my use cases. If I had known how good the MacBook Air was, I would never have bought the Windows laptop. I guess my next step is to sell the Windows laptop and iPad. I think the end state of my experience will be a more robust computing environment, and I now understand why so many people prefer Apple products. I've always disliked Windows, although 7 was usable and not barf-inducing. So I ran mostly Linux, or Linux in a virtual machine, most recently on W10, which is awful. PowerShell seems to finally provide a good command line interface, but too late to teach this dog new tricks. It's generally less buggy than Linux, although KDE and Cinnamon desktops are more configurable and superior in some ways.īiggest downside to MacOS, I guess, is the lack of Quicken full version. I too bought an M1 Air to try out MacOS once again, because the laptop seemed amazing. As with you, I have been blown away by the laptop!! The performance, the battery life, the screen, the keyboard, just incredible hardware, and for what a Dell XPS13 would have cost, perhaps cheaper, especially given the performance. I thought I would just use this as a notebook, to replace the Lenovo notebook that I got a couple years ago and have always hated. However, the MacBook was so incredible I wound up using it for the stuff for which I previously used a Windows desktop with a dedicated graphics card and lot of RAM.īecause I didn't know how I would take to MacOS (I have owned several Macs in the past and always got rid of them after a few months because I was so frustrated my MacOS, everything seemed far harder than anything on my Windows machines, or even Linux, in many ways, and that is saying a lot lol), I got the model with only 8GB of RAM. I wound up buying a keyboard, dock, and 4K monitor for the MacBook, and using it for everything. The problem is the RAM is just not enough. I have issues, especially with my raw converter, and try to use only one app at a time, which is frustrating. ![]() The raw converter is unhappy even if it is the only thing open if I make many adjustments my photo editor seems to handle things far better. I had planned to replace my Windows desktop in the spring. If I had bought the version with 16GB of RAM, I probably would just use my MacBook instead. ![]() ![]() As it is, if Apple drops a new mini with the M1 Pro chips, I will get one of those instead. The bigger issue is that I still mostly hate MacOS. ![]()
